The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all parents-to-be have a prenatal prenatal visit—usually in the third trimester or earlier—as an important first step in building a relationship of trust and support. At this stage, the parent is able to place greater emphasis and focus on information to feel adequately prepared for the challenges ahead.
During a prenatal visit a first meeting and discussion with the family takes place. Important pregnancy and family history information is collected. Full instructions are given on what a new parent needs to know regarding the safety and well-being of the new family member. The pediatric prenatal visit is a good time to talk about normal feelings of stress from a crying baby or other demands of caring for an infant, and to make clear plans to help deal with stress before you feel overwhelmed.
In addition to answering any pressing questions parents have about bringing a new baby home, a prenatal visit can help anticipate unrecognized challenges, such as postpartum depression or coping with breastfeeding difficulties. At the same time, it can introduce positive parenting strategies as well as ways to build strong parent-child bonds that promote resilience and help a child remain emotionally healthy. Parents are encouraged to bring other family members who will have an important role in the baby's life to the visit. It is important to emphasize that a prenatal visit to the pediatrician is highly recommended for those who become parents for the first time as well as in cases of high-risk pregnancy, in cases facing complications, in multiple pregnancies or in the process of adopting a child.
