Move your baby into the shade under a tree, umbrella or stroller canopy. Dress babies in light clothing that covers arms and legs, and use hats with brims that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For older children, the first and best line of defense against harmful UV exposure is coverage. Stay in the shade whenever possible and limit sun exposure during peak hours \u2013 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose protective clothing\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cotton clothing is both cool and protective. Try to find a hat with a wide brim that can shade the cheeks, chin, ears and back of the neck. Sunglasses with ultraviolet (UV) protection are also a good idea to protect children&#039;s eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use sunscreen<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to areas of your child&#039;s skin that are not covered by clothing. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside, as it takes time for the skin to absorb. Reapply every two hours after swimming, sweating or wiping. The additional benefits of using an SPF 50+ sunscreen are limited. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#039;s okay to use sunscreen on babies on small areas of their skin that aren&#039;t protected by clothing or hats. But remember that babies touch their mouths a lot so you should be careful and avoid consuming sunscreen in this way. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When choosing a sunscreen, look for a waterproof product and the words \u201cbroad spectrum\u201d on the label.
