However, when a sore throat persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, it could be tonsillitis \u2013 an inflammation of the tonsils that is often caused by germs. Let\u2019s take a look at how you can recognize the differences and when you need a medical evaluation.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>WHEN IS IT A SIMPLE SORE THROAT?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A simple sore throat can occur due to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Upper respiratory tract infections<\/li>\n<li>Dry air or allergies<\/li>\n<li>Irritation from dust, smoke or pollutants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mild to moderate pain<\/li>\n<li>Dryness or tickling in the throat<\/li>\n<li>Mild cough<\/li>\n<li>Possible runny nose or congestion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It usually resolves on its own in 2-3 days, with good hydration, rest, and soft foods.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>WHEN IS IT TONSILLITIS?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which can be caused by either viruses or bacteria (usually streptococcus).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms suggestive of tonsillitis:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe throat pain, especially when swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Swollen and red tonsils (often with white plaques or pus)<\/li>\n<li>High fever<\/li>\n<li>Bad breath<\/li>\n<li>Swollen lymph nodes in the neck<\/li>\n<li>Headache or ear pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In bacterial tonsillitis (e.g. streptococcus), the symptoms are more intense and there is often no cough or runny nose.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>WHEN TO SEE A PEDIATRICIAN<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Contact your pediatrician if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sore throat lasts more than 3 days<\/li>\n<li>There is a high fever or severe difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<li>The child is exhausted or has swollen lymph nodes<\/li>\n<li>You notice pus or white spots on your tonsils<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The doctor may recommend a test for streptococci and, if necessary, antibiotic treatment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>CONCLUSION<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It is not always easy for a parent to distinguish between a simple sore throat and tonsillitis.
