Annual influenza vaccination is a key preventive measure in childhood. In recent years, in addition to the classic injectable vaccines, a newer form of administration has been added, specifically aimed at children: the intranasal influenza vaccine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From the autumn 2025<\/strong>, this specific option is also available in Greece, allowing vaccination without the use of a needle.<\/p>\n

How it works<\/h2>\n

Unlike injectable vaccines, intranasal:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • \n

    contains live attenuated viruses<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    acts locally in the nasopharynx<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    activates the immune defense from the "entrance gate" of the virus<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Administered with nasal spray<\/strong>, in a very small amount, without pain or injury.<\/p>\n

    What ages is it aimed at?<\/h2>\n

    The vaccine can be used in children from 2 to 18 years old<\/strong>.
    Its application is given priority to children 2\u20135 years old<\/strong>, an age group for which there is also compensation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    In older children, vaccination is possible, but it is done without cost coverage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Why would a family prefer it?<\/h2>\n

    For many children, fear of injections is an obstacle to vaccination. The intranasal form:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • \n

      reduces stress and resistance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      facilitates the child's cooperation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      quickly applied in the doctor's office<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      At the same time, it is a vaccine with long experience of use internationally<\/strong> and well-documented safety profile.<\/p>\n

      When it is not a suitable option<\/h2>\n

      Due to its composition, it is not recommended for children with:<\/p>\n

        recent episodes of wheezing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        known bronchial asthma<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        immunosuppression conditions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        long-term treatment with salicylates<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        In these cases, protection against influenza is achieved by: injectable flu vaccines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        The available vaccination options<\/h2>\n

        Today, the pediatrician can choose between:<\/p>\n

          injectable inactivated vaccines<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          cell culture vaccines<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          intranasal vaccine\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The choice is made individually, based on the child's history.<\/p>\n

          When is the right time?<\/h2>\n

          Influenza vaccination is recommended before the start of the seasonal outbreak<\/strong>, ideally from mid-October to late November.
          If this is not possible, it can be done later in the winter.<\/p>\n

          How many doses are needed?<\/h2>\n
